Back to Identification Guide

This species, like all crested gibbons, exhibits strong sexual dichromatism. Males usually exhibit a brown chest. The occipital crest is relatively small. Females exhibit a broad light face ring and a very large black occipital patch which conects to the black facial area and which extends dorsally down to the shoulder blades. The females usually exhibit a black belly, but the extent of the dark ventral fur is variable. In some females, the dark ventral fur is weekly expressed. Females of N. concolor also exhibit a dark ventral area, whereas females of other species of crested gibbons have a light ventral area.
