Species studied:
Western black crested gibbon (Nomascus concolor)

Research objectives:
- Population estimates (October 2000 - April 2001):
- Group numbers and locations
- Group composition from calls and sightings
- Threats to population
- Monitoring of population (ongoing)
- GIS analysis of gibbon habitat requirements (July/August 2001)

Comments:
The research project is part of FFI Indochina's Gibbon Conservation Project, and so is linked to conservation activities in Che Tao, including:
- Setting up Forest Stewardship Councils;
- Education of the local people in the importance of preserving the forest and the gibbons;
- Hunting bans on gibbons and rufous-necked hornbills;
- Feasibility Study to assign protected area status, creating Che Tao Species/Habitat Protection Area (a sub-unit of Nature Reserve).
